First published in 1970, this powerful coming-of-age novel is set against the backdrop of World War II Hungary and follows the journey of Gina Vitay, a headstrong and intelligent teenage girl whose life changes dramatically when she is sent away from her cosmopolitan home in Budapest to a strict Calvinist girls boarding school in the provincial town of rkod.Gina, the only daughter of a respected general, struggles to adjust to the rigid, conservative environment of the school, where conformity and discipline rule every aspect of daily life. Isolated and rebellious, she initially resents her new surroundings and the seemingly distant classmates, but as the war intensifies and secrets begin to surface, Gina is forced to confront the complexity of the world around herand of herself. At the heart of the story is the mysterious figure of Abigail, a statue in the schools garden, rumored among students to grant help in times of dire need. Ginas growing belief in Abigail and her interactions with this symbol of hope lend the novel a subtle touch of magical realism, offering both spiritual solace and practical solutions during a time of growing turmoil.”Abigail” masterfully weaves together themes of resilience, identity, loyalty, sacrifice, and the transformative power of friendship. Szab Magda’s elegant prose and psychological insight create a vivid portrait not only of a young girls emotional and moral growth but also of a society gripped by fear and silence during wartime. This novel remains a cornerstone of Hungarian literature and continues to resonate with readers of all ages for its timeless message of courage and empathy in the face of oppression.Hungarian Translation – Overview (Attekintes)A “Abigl” Szab Magda egyik legnpszerbb s legismertebb regnye, amely immr az angol olvaskznsg szmra is elrhet, hiteles s rzkeny fordtsban.
