Church Matters, Vol. VI: Polity

Church Matters: Polity

Product Overview: This edition of Church Matters dives into the often-overlooked but essential topic of church polity. Far from being mere administrative scaffolding, biblical church government is presented as an organic outgrowth of the gospel itself. This volume explores how a church’s structure directly shapes its ethics, discipleship, and public witness. While primarily making the case for elder-led congregationalism, the journal graciously includes perspectives from Presbyterian and Anglican traditions. Pastors and church leaders will find theological foundations and intensely practical advice for implementing a healthy governance structure that protects the church and fuels its evangelistic mission.

Key Topics Covered in This Issue:

• Theological definitions and defenses of various church government models, exploring the roles of elders, deacons, and the congregation.

• Practical application of polity in the local church, including aligning staff structures and faithfully transitioning to an elder-led model.

• A guide to navigating members’ meetings, covering the theological weight of congregational voting, handling difficult issues, and defusing hostility.

• The direct correlation between healthy, biblically ordered polity and fruitful church planting, robust evangelism, and combating consumerism.

• Unique challenges and insights for applying elder-led congregationalism in diverse international contexts, including Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
